7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
What have you learnt?
I have learnt many things including new Photoshop skills, new photography skills, how to be more creative with my products and how to apply media conventions more to my work. I have learnt more about audiences, the types of audiences and how to attract them. I have learnt how to make my magazine product look more realistic (like a professional magazine). I have learnt the conventions of a magazine and how you need to keep a magazine consistent throughout using colours and fonts.
How have you developed?
My work is considerably stronger than my preliminary task. It uses the conventions better, the colour scheme is better, the text is more clear etc. My work is now more detailed and more realistic to a professional magazine. It has better cover stories and better images. It is more specific to my target audience, only attracting those who enjoy the pop genre. It is more interesting for the reader focusing more specifically on what I wanted to convey (this time, pop music).
What would you change?
I would improve my preliminary task a lot. I would make the text of the feature stories stand out by putting them over different coloured shapes. This would ensure they were really easy to read. I would change the position of the barcode, turning it vertically to fit better in the corner making it more discreet and following conventions better. The plug is in a strange place so I would move it to the top, next to the mast head. This would make it better because then the reader would be able to see more of the cover image making my magazine more conventional. I am happy with my font as it is consistent all the way through and I am also happy with my mast head because it stands out, is catchy and effective.
Why was it useful carrying out the preliminary task?
The test run of the preliminary task gave me a brief overview of what it would be like creating a music magazine. It showed me the challenges I faced and gave me a chance to over come them before I made the product I was going to be marked on. It showed me the tools I had to use in Photoshop, and the skills I needed to create the conventions a magazine needs.
What skills and knowledge did you learn in order to produce a music magazine?
I learnt a lot including how to create a front cover, contents page and double page spread based on a genre of music and how to make it appealing for the audience of that genre. I learnt how to do a LIIAR analysis of a magazine and how to use the information I got from it to my benefit. I had to research example magazines of my pop genre that exist how and see how they adhere to the wants of their audiences and learn how to use that. Lots of peer feedback helped also in order for me to create my media product.
